Tips for making the most of your first ski trip

December 3, 2017
Your very first ski trip is an event you will never forget. From the first time you get off a lift to the first slope you successfully conquer, it's a trip filled with excitement and uncertainty that keeps you hooked on this sport from the very first day. Follow these tips from local ski instructors to make the most out of your first ski trip.

Your very first ride on a lift can be intimidating yet exciting

Get Acquainted with the Resort
The first day you arrive is the perfect time to make preparations for a few days of skiing. Take time to get acclimated, visit a ski shop to get fitted for gear, take a tour of the resort and become familiar with the easy runs by reviewing a trail map. Becoming mentally and physically ready will make for a better first day than diving into a new sport unprepared.

Rent Equipment
With the uncertainty of your first day, it's better to rent your equipment before committing yourself to an expensive purchase you may later regret. There are several benefits to renting: you can always try new models, you can change skis as your performance improves, and you don't have to lug around equipment when traveling. Also, you may decide you'd rather try snowboarding. Being stuck with equipment you don't want can easily ruin your ski trip. Play it safe, head to a ski shop and let them know you need a rental for a beginner. After your ski trip, you can decide whether you want to buy or continue to rent for future trips.

Clothes
The best way to ruin a ski trip is a lack of preparation for the elements on the mountain. Imagine being frustrated as a beginner while dealing with cold and wet conditions. The best way to enjoy your time up there is to make sure you are comfortable and warm with the right attire. Purchase ski pants and a ski jacket, avoid clothes that are not waterproof and wear a base layer for added warmth. Goggles and a helmet are a necessity! You want to protect your eyes from the sun and snow, and protect your head from falls.

Take a lesson from an instructor
The best way to learn the basics and build confidence on skis is to take a lesson from a ski instructor. You may be on vacation with friends who have been skiing for years and have promised to teach you, but lessons from friends can be frustrating for beginners. A ski instructor will have patience and empathy and will have the best advice on teaching you the basics. Even simple tasks such as getting off the lift can be very intimidating, but your instructor will be there to guide you and cheer you on along the way! When choosing the right lessons, a private instructor is the best way to go, but if the price doesn't fit into your budget, a group lesson is also a great way to learn with others who are at the same level as you.

Plan ahead to have fun and make the most of your day!

Most importantly, have fun! For most people, their first time skiing can be frustrating and exhausting. Take your time and remember that the more you practice, the easier it gets. You'll soon understand why thousands of people flock to the mountains every year. The thrill of skiing can be quite addicting and you'll find yourself looking forward to your next trip on the slopes.
