Spectator friendly extreme ski competition coming to Breck's newest terrain, The Six Senses

March 13, 2017
With events like the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, spectators are used to seeing the very best of the sport in the man made competition venue.

But what about the

non-man-made venues? The things you see in the movies, impossible terrain, natural steeps and big mountain faces.

Recently this extreme skiing has itself become a judged sport which spectators can enjoy. And enjoy it, they do, as this type of skiing - while popular in movies - isn't something you get to see with the naked eye very often.

On March 18-19, 2017, the International Freeskiers Association will bring a Big Mountain Challenge to Breckenridge Mountain for athletes ages 18 and younger. The International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) was established in 1996 by the late Shane McConkey, who believed that "the sports included in freeskiing (big mountain, slopestyle, half-pipe, big air, and skier-cross) needed an athlete driven governing body to ensure that the athletes had a voice in the development and governance of their sport," orgainizers write on the IFSA website, www.freeskiers.org. "Since then, the sport of freeskiing has grown rapidly and each of the disciplines have evolved into strong individual sports. Today the IFSA is centered on junior and adult big mountain freeskiing and snowboarding competitions and is now known as the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association."

The event will take place on Breck’s newest terrain, The Six Senses. Athletes will draw steep lines through tight chutes and big cliff drops as they compete for points in the IFSA Series.

The event is sponsored by GoPro and will indeed be spectator friendly. The athletes will get an inspection run from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the action will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19, 2017. This will be a junior regional with athlete divisions from Under 12, 12-14, and 15-18.
