Safety, Comfort, and Performance: Why You Need to See a Boot Fitter

December 17, 2017

There are many variables that can add to a great ski vacation and finding the proper gear for your day on the mountain can make all the difference. For those who are new to the sport or are finally purchasing their own set of skis, it may seem fairly simple to obtain everything you need on your own. Turns out, if you want to be safe and comfortable on the slopes, seeking help from a professional boot fitter is a necessary step.

After speaking with Brian Tyler, a boot fitter from Base Mountain Sports, it became clear to me that the process of boot fitting is more complicated than one might think. Brian has completed a significant amount of specialized training. In addition to years of education at ski shops, Brian has attended exclusive trainings in Aspen that last up to 10 hours per day. Clearly, boot fitting is serious business.
Boot fitters will emphasize how important it is to speak with a professional rather than having yourself or a friend find the right boots for you. Bryan explained how every brand is different and that fitting individuals for ski boots is unlike finding shoes or even snowboard boots. Other than size, the skill level of the skier can make an impact on choosing the appropriate boots. Beginners will require something different than an advanced skier and in addition to performance, the flexibility and overall feeling will vary from person to person.
When Bryan was asked about the biggest mistake he's seen people make, he stated he often sees people get into boots that are too big. Oversized boots on an individual are the hardest issue to fix, he explained, and it is incredibly difficult to make boots smaller, but significantly easier to make them bigger. From his experience, it's apparent that individuals who attempt to find boots on their own often make critical mistakes.
If safety, comfort, and performance are important to you while skiing, a visit to a ski shop and a boot fitter should be on the top of your list. Knowledgeable professionals like Bryan at Base Mountain Sports are skilled and ready to find you the perfect boots to ensure your best time on the mountain.
