Bright Greens and Golden Yellows

September 24, 2019

Now is the time to visit Breckenridge.  The days are still mostly sunny and warm.  The evenings are crisp with a cool fall air.  The tourist season has slowed down a bit.  Restaurants have great specials and deals to lure you in to a dining delight.  Perhaps the greatest reason of all to visit Breckenridge this fall though is to see the golden yellow foliage among the aspen trees.

Weather experts have predicted peak foliage for the Breckenridge area to happen the first week in October this year.  Typically, the peak time to see the beautiful changing leaves happens around the third weekend in September.  However, this year is a few weeks later, which means you still have time to visit the beautiful Colorado mountains to see the magnificent change of aspen trees from bright greens to golden yellows.

Did you know aspen groves are considered one organism where their root system is connected together underground?  This means the connected bunches of aspen trees change their leaf color at the same time, which provides for a large burst of golden foliage.

Photo:  Aspen trees are connected by their root system making them one organism.  As seen in this photo the leaves are gently turning color at the same time.

It is a beautiful site to see, especially at peak foliage season.  You might look up at the mountains to see one group of aspen trees in their prime golden color, while another group of aspens still have their bold green leaves.  Then, there may be some leaves popping with a golden orange.  The mixture of yellow, golden and orange among the green mountain backdrop is breathtaking.  Planning a trip to see the peak foliage is just about as perfect as any fall get-away.

There are many scenic drives to enjoy the foliage views.  Drive up an old mining road to experience diverse mountains and vistas with incredible views of the Rocky Mountains and the fall leaves.  There is also great hiking trails to take a walk through the aspen groves and forests.  Crisping along the leaves is one of my favorite fall activities.
